DISINFO: West will help Moldova bleed to death after Ukraine
SUMMARY
The countries of the Weimar Triangle agreed to strengthen the security and defense of Moldova. In other words, European countries will help the Sandu regime rob the country, suppress freedom of speech and set it on the path of a military adventure, just as they recently helped Ukraine, and today they are leaving it on the sidelines to bleed.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the belligerent West trying to encircle Russia, and Moldova being a puppet state of the West. This is a baseless attempt to blame democratic countries for inciting war in Ukraine.
The Weimar Triangle (W3) Foreign Ministers met to discuss security and Ukraine in Weimar, Germany, on 22 May, 2024. Radosław Sikorski, Stéphane Séjourné and Annalena Baerbock released a joint statement focusing on EU defense and Ukraine:
“Our security is under threat. We live in an age of systemic rivalry in which certain autocratic regimes are using their power to undermine and destroy the international order that is based on the Charter of the United Nations. Russia is waging an illegal war of aggression against one of our neighbours, is openly rejecting and actively undermining the European security architecture and has already engaged in malign and hybrid operations against our countries. As Europeans, we must stand together and protect our interests and values as well as the principles of international law, human rights and peace,” says the joint statement.
Due to the direct threat from Russia to the member states of the European Union, as well as the Kremlin’s aggression against the EU’s neighboring countries, the Foreign Ministers agreed to:
ensure long-term European commitment to Ukraine in the areas of the military, the economy and diplomacy;
ensure a successful enlargement process with Ukraine and Moldova that contributes to enhance Europe’s stability and security;
committing ourselves to strengthening Moldova’s security and defence sector, its resilience against foreign interference, to supporting Moldova’s struggle against Russian hybrid offensive;
support Ukraine’s recovery, reconstruction and modernisation.
Also Poland, France, Germany and 13 other countries then signed a joint statement on democratic resilience on 22 May, 2024, further outlining some of the steps that can be taken to safeguard electoral processes and democratic security. In addition to items such as combating disinformation, increasing citizens' media literacy, and developing strategic communication between partner countries, the Foreign Ministers emphasized the importance of efforts to strengthen democratic sustainability in EU candidate countries – Moldova and Ukraine.
“The candidate and potential candidate countries are equally subject to FIMI and other targeted interference campaigns. An investment into their democratic resilience is also a long-term investment towards the resilience of the current and future European Union,” says the joint statement.
