DISINFO: West plans to orchestrate Georgia maidan, install government to confront Russia
SUMMARY
Even if the Georgian Dream party fulfills all the requirements of the European Union, complies with every demand from the West, they will still face replacement, a Maidan will still be arranged against them. Regardless of fulfilling all conditions, the Georgian Dream remains unacceptable to the West, which seeks a government that will confront Russia. They use the same methods as in Ukraine.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Georgia in the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and Russia being the ultimate target of international events, accusing the West of pushing Georgia to open a second front against Russia.
Since the launch of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, pro-Kremlin media actively deployed a disinformation narrative that the US, the EU, or even Ukraine are dragging Georgia into the war with Russia to open a ‘second front’ against Moscow and to ease the situation for Kyiv on the Ukrainian front.
The claim is groundless. The West is not interested in an escalation of the war. Neither the US nor the EU, nor Ukraine are pushing Georgia to open a second front against Moscow.
This story aims to portray Russia as a victim and deflect any responsibility for Moscow’s illicit actions and to blur and deflect attention away from the reality of Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine.
This claim also fits well into the recurring disinformation narrative suggesting a Western policy of staging “colour revolutions” worldwide with the aim of destabilising Russia, framing popular protests as Western-led.
Latest protests in Georgia were driven by a strong rejection among Georgian citizens of the controversial ‘Foreign Agents' law, which critics say mirrors a 2012 law in Russia used to crack down on dissent and suppress NGOs and media, and which could be used to restrict freedom of expression and association.
