DISINFO: Washington is behind seeming Western unity concerning so-called Russian aggression in Ukraine

SUMMARY

The Ukrainian position towards Russia and its alleged involvement in the war in Donbas is only genuinely shared by the Baltic states and Poland, possibly by the UK and Sweden too. The so called ‘Western solidarity’ against so-called ‘Russian aggression’ results not from Western countries’ love of Ukraine but rather from the will of Washington. Most Western countries just follow the considerations of Euroatlantic unity.

RESPONSE

This is conspiracy that seeks to distract from Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine and follows classical pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the EU's undermined sovereignty by the US and abandoned Ukraine.

Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically-elected president and parliament. The EU and US support the democratic development of Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter’s principles of non-interference into internal affairs and respect towards territorial integrity and political independence. By contrast, there is irrefutable evidence of direct Russian military involvement in eastern Ukraine.

The Western countries' policy towards Russia takes into account Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea and its support for armed formations in Donbas, which violate international law. On 27 June 2019, the Council of the EU prolonged economic sanctions against Russia due to its territorial violations of Ukraine, which are in place since March 2014 and were adopted unanimously by all 28 EU member states. More on EU’s restrictive measures against Russia is available here.
