DISINFO: US opened second front against Russia in Syria
SUMMARY
The reasons behind the recent military successes of pro-Turkish terrorists in Syria are the Syrian government's weakness, Russia's preoccupation with special military operations in Ukraine, Iran's indecision, and US efforts to create a second front against Russia. This second front has been opened, as terrorists have rapidly seized Syrian provinces that were previously reclaimed by Russian, Syrian, and Iranian forces after prolonged efforts.
RESPONSE
This claim was made in the context of and during Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham's (HTS) capture of key Syrian cities which lead to the final collapse of Al-Assad’s regime on 08 December 2024. This claim also fits well into recurring disinformation narrative suggesting Western policy of staging “colour revolutions” worldwide with the aim of destabilising Russia.
This publication is consistent with the recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about Russophobia and an allegedly belligerent and hostile agenda of the Western countries, and that the war in Ukraine was provoked by Western countries.
Since the launch of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, pro-Kremlin media actively deployed a disinformation narrative that the US, the EU, or even Ukraine are dragging other countries into the war with Russia in order to open a ‘second front’ against Moscow and to ease the situation for Kyiv on the Ukrainian front. The claim is groundless. Western countries are not interested in an escalation of the war. Neither the US nor the EU are pushing any country in the world to open a second front against Moscow.
This story aims to portray Russia as a victim and deflect any responsibility for Moscow’s illicit actions and to blur and deflect attention away from the reality of Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine.
