DISINFO: US, NATO fanning militarist hysteria in Ukraine
SUMMARY
The United States and its NATO partners are encouraging militaristic moods in Ukraine, so that its people fight against Russia "until the last remaining Ukrainian."
RESPONSE
This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets accusing the West of Russophobia and playing an active role in the war. This claim is made in the context of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
Neither the United States, nor the European Union, nor NATO are trying to fan any militarist hysteria in Ukraine against Russia. The fact that Western nations are supplying Ukraine with weapons cannot be regarded as Russophobia because they are helping Ukriane defend itself from Russian invasion.
It is Moscow who is fanning militarist sentiment in its relations with neighbouring countries and their allies. Russia attacked Georgia and occupied part of its territory in 2008. It illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and instigated a separatist revolt in Donbas in 2014. On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine once again and threatened Western nations with retaliation if they chose to provide Ukraine with arms.
