DISINFO: US hasn’t ratified the Biological Weapons Convention and uses labs around Russia
SUMMARY
According to experts, 16 American biological laboratories operate on Ukrainian territory. The dangerous thing is that these vital laboratories are not in remote areas, but rather near large cities.
America has never ratified the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological and Toxin Weapons, nor on the destruction of those weapons. They have simply removed these dangerous laboratories from their land. Now they are operating as if in a grey area. Their biological laboratories are not limited to Ukraine, they also exist in Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia, which surrounds (Russia) as a potential enemy.
RESPONSE
The claim is part of a Kremlin attempt to mobilise domestic Russian support for its war by deliberately playing on the fear-and-scare factor around chemical weapons.
Recurring narrative alleging that the United States develops biological weapons which are consistent with the pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign against biological laboratories in Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine and other countries.
The claim about US Biolabs in countries bordering Russia aiming to encircle Moscow and spread infectious diseases is a part of a years-long disinformation campaign led by the Kremlin. In fact, biological laboratories are involved in preventing the risks of complex diseases and, together with other similar projects, counteracting bioterrorism.
Contrary to the claim, the “Biological Weapons Convention” entered into force in the US on 26 March 26 1975, on the same day as in the USSR at the time.
According to the UN, there are no signs of any biological weapons programme conducted in Ukraine, despite the claims made by Russia.
