DISINFORMATION CASE DETAILS

DISINFO: US forces transport ISIS members inside Syria

SUMMARY

US forces moved 10 combatants of the terrorist group ISIS from their illegal base in the Syrian province in Al Hasaka to the Deir Ezzor province. According to sources, those extremists were transported in two helicopters from the US base in Al Shaddadi to a different place in the desert in Deir Ezzor.

RESPONSE

Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the West’s alleged support for terrorism in the Middle East. No evidence is provided to support the claim.

Contrary to what is claimed, the US has not cooperated with the Islamic State and terrorist groups. In fact, it has led the global coalition to defeat the Islamic State and is part of the Operation Inherent Resolve that has been ongoing to attack and degrade the capabilities of the group since 2014.

See other examples of this disinformation narrative, such as claims that the West is supporting terrorists to encircle Russia; that the EU is supporting terrorism against the Syrian state; that instead of killing ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the US may have evacuated him; that the US is transporting ISIS members to Afghanistan; or that extremists and Nazis are being trained in Ukraine to act in Belarus.
