SUMMARY

RESPONSE

Recurrent Russian narrative about the Nazi/ fascist forces, especially in Ukraine, that threaten the world and the story of anti-fascist forces led by Moscow. The motto Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes! has roots in the 19th century and the birth of Ukrainian nation. It was first used in the 1918-1920 wars for the independence of Ukraine much before the emergence of Fascism in Italy and Nazism in Germany. More about the history of the slogan can be read here (in Ukrainian).

The Soviet administration used the word fascist to depict all critics of Moscow's imperialism. For example, the Berlin wall was “the Anti-Fascist Protective Wall.”, the 1956 Hungarian uprising a “a fascist rebellion”, as was the Prague Spring of 1968.

This narrative depicts Moscow as leading the Anti-fascist/Nazi coalition while whitewashing the USSR’s own 1939-41 alliance with Nazi-Germany based on the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.
