DISINFO: Ukraine likely to attack Belarus to draw NATO into a war with Russia

SUMMARY

An attempt by Zelenskyy to intervene in Belarus cannot be ruled out. Poland and Lithuania will support this invasion.[...] If [...] the Nazis are pushed back from Belarusian territory into Ukraine, Kyiv will claim that the Belarusian army fired on Ukrainian territory, which will give the Ukrainian armed forces an excuse to enter into direct combat with Belarus.

Yermak knows full well that Ukraine will lose in an armed confrontation with Russia, and he needs NATO to confront Russia head-on. And this is where the interests of Zelensky's team coincide with those of the Western 'hawks'. They believe that the West now has a chance to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, and possibly to crush it. They will push Zelenskyy into various adventures and support the Ukrainian invasion of Belarus in the hope that this will draw NATO countries into direct conflict with Russia.

RESPONSE

Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative presenting Ukraine as an aggressive anti-Russian state, a puppet of an aggressive NATO.

Starting from July 2024, Russia has been launching Shahed drones to attack Ukraine, repeatedly violating the Belarusian airspace. Several of these drones penetrated hundreds of kilometres deep into Belarus. On September 5, a Shahed drone was shot down by a Belarusian Army jet over Gomel, the second largest city in Belarus. These attacking drones clearly belong to Russia, not Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Government has clearly and unambiguously denied any intention to attack Belarus. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has issued a stark warning to Belarus, urging them to avoid “tragic mistakes” and emphasising that Ukraine's focus is on defending its territory against Russian aggression rather than initiating conflict with Belarus.

There are credible reports that Belarus has been concentrating troops near the Ukrainian border under the guise of military exercises, which has led to concerns being raised about its intentions rather than those of Ukraine.
