DISINFO: Ukraine is not sovereign
SUMMARY
In the meantime, Ukraine is experiencing the opposite of everything that the foreign supporters of the Maidan had promised the Ukrainians with their rapprochement to the West. The country is not sovereign, but completely dependent on the West financially and politically.
RESPONSE
Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukrainian statehood, portraying Ukraine as a not sovereign country. The aim is to destroy the Ukrainian identity and legal status of Ukraine as is also attampted by president Putin in his 21 February speech.
Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically-elected president and parliament. Ukraine, as an independent country, has a functioning government and economy, it is a member of many international organisations, such as the United Nations and the Council of Europe, and a party to international agreements. Ukraine has bilateral diplomatic relations with the majority of countries.
The country is not controlled by any foreign government or organisation. Both the EU and the US respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Moreover, Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected by almost the whole world with Russia as the key exception.
