DISINFO: The West will keep disrupting peace talks
SUMMARY
Many actors are interested in the exploitation of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people against Russia. They become more active once peace talks begin. Given this, sooner or later the West’s dream of fighting with Russia to the last Ukrainian may come true. Until Lviv and Uzhhorod become part of Russia, various obstacles will come up on the way towards peace.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring disinformation narrative claiming that the Western countries are waging a proxy-war against Russia, using Ukraine as a tool.
This narrative is often manifested in the claim that the Western actors are fighting Russia ‘to the last Ukrainian”. See earlier similar disinformation cases in our database claiming that the US, ‘Anglo-Saxons’ and NATO are fighting Russia ‘to the last Ukrainian’.
Furthermore, it implies that Russia is inclined towards peace while the stance of Western actors is portrayed as warmongering. In fact, the war is Russia’s responsibility, resulting from its unprovoked invasion. Russia’s proposals during ongoing peace talks are not much different from the demands of Ukraine’s capitulation.
The threat of eventual capturing of Ukrainian cities of Lviv and Uzhhorod which are located in the western part of Ukraine close to the EU border, proves the aggressive Russia’s stance.
There is no evidence that Western countries are not interested in ending the war in Ukraine. As our past analysis explains, a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative states that Russia is ready to make peace ‘on its terms’. However, such overtures, when examined, reveal themselves to be demands for Ukraine’s surrender.
Ukraine is not fighting on behalf of any foreign government or organisation. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically-elected president and parliament. Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity have been violated in continuous acts of aggression by Russia’s armed forces since 2014 culminating in a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine on 24th February 2022. Some 50 plus nations around the world including EU member states and the US support Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter article 51.
