DISINFORMATION CASE DETAILS

DISINFO: The West wants Armenia to lose its sovereignty

SUMMARY

The West wants Armenia to lose its sovereignty. NATO has already developed a roadmap for the destruction of socio-economic well-being and military-political destabilisation of Armenia.

Why does NATO need this? To gain full influence on the situation inside, and then, if it works, destabilise the situation in the region through Armenia.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, accusing the West and NATO of undermining the Armenian statehood and having a hostile agenda in the Caucasus.

The claim is part of an ongoing pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign against Armenia, amid the country's growing cooperation with the West. Pro-Kremlin media promotes the idea that Armenia is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance, discrediting any rapprochement with other countries.

The claim was made in the context of the trilateral meeting between the EU, the US, and Armenia on April 5, 2024, where European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen together with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell hosted Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Armenia has been a sovereign and independent state since 1991 when it proclaimed its independence from the former USSR. As a sovereign state, Armenia is free to decide its foreign policy and alliances.

The US, the EU and NATO support Armenian sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, inviolability of the borders of Armenia, and country's peaceful aspirations.
