DISINFO: The West is to blame for Ukraine war

SUMMARY

If Western countries, and above all the United States, had had the flexibility and wisdom to conclude a security agreement with Russia, there would have been no special military operation in Ukraine. But they are used to breaking everyone’s will. They operate on the principle of the exclusivity of US interests. This is a big mistake. It will simply ruin them some day.

RESPONSE

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that the EU, the US and their allies are responsible for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The allegation that a Western security agreement with Moscow could have prevented Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine is wrong. Russia put forward unachievable demands to NATO that the alliance should return to the borders before 1997, but the root causes of the invasion are different. They stem from Russia’s desire to expand its influence over former Soviet states, such as Ukraine.

Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine, launched on 24 February 2022, was unprovoked and unjustified. Moscow has since been trying to explain why it attacked Ukraine, citing false pretexts such as Kyiv’s threat for Russian national security and an alleged a genocide of the Russian-speaking population in Eastern Ukrainian regions. Ukraine has the sovereign right to align itself with other countries or organisations, although Russia is denying it this right and even the right to exist as an independent state.

A broad international coalition, including some NATO member states, has provided Ukraine with military and financial support to help it repel Russia’s aggression. NATO experts have trained Ukrainian forces, but the Alliance is not engaged in combat operations.
