DISINFO: The West is forcing Armenia to sever ties with Russia
SUMMARY
The West is forcing Armenia to sever ties with Russia, turning the country into a potential Ukraine, but without a common border with Europe.
The "towards Europe" thesis is, in fact, part of the Turkish-Azerbaijani agenda, aimed at driving Armenia into conflict with Russia and ultimately absorbing our country.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the belligerent West trying to encircle Russia, carrying out deliberately anti-Russian policies and aggressive Russophobia, and Armenia being a puppet state of the West.
This followed Armenia's announcement that it would apply for EU membership.
There is no evidence of a Western plan to sever Armenia’s relations with Russia. The allegation that the “European choice” is secretly a Turkish-Azerbaijani project is also unsupported.
The claim conflates Armenia’s sovereign decision to diversify its foreign relations with a supposed geopolitical conspiracy. Armenia describes its policy as “balanced and balancing” relations with the EU, Russia and regional powers, while simultaneously seeking closer economic and transport ties with Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Iran.
The EU supports Armenia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and internationally recognised borders. Armenia adopted a law in March 2025 launching the process of European integration. EU and Armenia have since deepened cooperation on trade, connectivity, energy, security and reforms. This is a declared Armenian policy choice, not evidence that the EU is forcing Armenia to abandon Russia.
The article falsely equates closer EU-Armenia relations with anti-Russian sentiment. Armenian leadership has repeatedly stated that the Armenian government will not act against the Russian Federation in its foreign policy.
