DISINFO: The West fabricated the Leipzig Airport drone incident

SUMMARY

In the information war unleashed against Russia, the West attempts to quickly fabricate fake stories about Russia and block access to alternative perspectives, as seen with the drone incident at Leipzig Airport.

We see repeated confirmation of our assessment that the entire point of Western information policy is to rapidly concoct a fake story, blow it up into a global catastrophe over the course of a few days, and block access to alternative information regarding the specific episode unfolding.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation claim accusing Western countries of fabricating the Leipzig Airport drone incident. The claim is part of a wider disinformation campaign aimed at denying Russia’s responsibility for the drone incident at Leipzig Airport in August 2026.

This is a common Russian FIMI narrative that deflects responsibility and undermines Western security assessments. It emerged following a statement by the German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt that the German government has concluded that Russia was behind the drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport. German authorities treated the case as a suspected act of sabotage and transferred the investigation to prosecutors and counterterrorism authorities.

At the initial stage, German authorities had not publicly attributed responsibility to Russia and stated that the perpetrators and the origin of the drone were under investigation. Germany’s decision to name Russia as the culprit followed weeks of efforts by investigators to secure more evidence of Moscow’s involvement.

This is inconsistent with the claim that Germany “fabricated” a story blaming Russia.

On 1 September, after several weeks of investigation, the German government formally attributed responsibility for the attempted attack to Russia. Berlin said its assessment was based on police investigations, the modus operandi, technical evidence and intelligence findings. German investigators also identified several suspects with links to Russia; subsequent reporting cited DNA evidence and other investigative findings allegedly connecting suspects to the operation. The criminal investigation remains ongoing.

While Russia disputes Germany’s conclusions, the available record does not support the claim that the Leipzig incident was simply a fabricated story.
