DISINFO: The West aims at bringing an anti-Russian government to power in Georgia
SUMMARY
The West is looking for a new resource to weaken Russia. The main goal is to bring to power in Georgia people who are aggressively opposed to Russia. They will have to unquestioningly fulfil the demands of the West, as the authorities in Kyiv are doing today. The intelligence services of the US and UK are constantly preparing coups and 'color revolutions'. They do this where they have prepared the ground, where they have agents. Now the choice has fallen on Georgia, because the US and UK believe that the current government of Georgia is not completely loyal to the West.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about Georgia in the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, accusing the Western countries, and particularly the US and UK, of anti-Russian policies and an allegedly belligerent and hostile agenda trying to encircle Russia, and Russia being the ultimate target of international events. The claims also portray Georgia a Western puppet state.
No evidence is provided to support the claim that the US and UK intelligence services are allegedly preparing an overthrow of the government in Georgia.
This particular disinformation claim emerged after the State Security Service of Georgia issued a statement underscoring that 'a certain group of people, both inside and outside of Georgia, is currently plotting to orchestrate destabilisation and civil unrest in the country” with an ultimate goal to “forcibly overthrow the government.'
The State Security Service of Georgia did name certain individuals involved in the plotting and stated that 'the execution of this plot is being coordinated and financially supported by foreign countries', however, it is a common pro-Kremlin propaganda tactic to directly blame the West for such attempts.
Since the launch of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, pro-Kremlin media actively deployed a disinformation narrative falsely claiming that the US, the EU, or even Ukraine are dragging Georgia into the war with Russia in order to open a ‘second front’ against Moscow and to ease the situation for Kyiv on the Ukrainian front.
This disinformation narrative often appeared in the context of showcasing various protests in Georgia as a foreign-led ‘colour revolution’ or a coup attempt. The pro-Kremlin media frequently falsely portray popular protests around the world as instigated from abroad, often by the US and the West. The disinformation narrative has been applied, among others, to reports about protests in Georgia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Belarus, Venezuela, Slovakia, Hong Kong, with the aim of portraying protest movements as aggressive actors who constantly prepare new coups.
