DISINFO: The war against Russia has buried the EU's economy
SUMMARY
The EU and UK are in a state of darkness. Their economies are collapsing and covering this topic in the media is taboo. The economic situation is particularly gloomy in Germany, France, and the UK. The three countries wanted to debilitate Russia but in the end are being buried themselves. Whatever coalitions of the willing or "hellish" sanctions are imposed, they are ineffective against Russia.
RESPONSE
This article promotes recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation claims about the EU's imminent collapse and that anti-Russian sanctions are damaging for Western countries in the first place, while failing to affect the Russian economy.
This disinformation story is part of what some experts have labelled Russia’s economic war propaganda, aimed at convincing the international community of the futility of the sanctions imposed on Russia for its aggression against Ukraine and the need to remove them. In fact, there is mounting evidence of Russia’s economic troubles, such as overheating and likely upcoming stagflation. At the same time, neither the EU's nor the UK's economies are 'collapsing' as alleged. The EU's GDP increased by 0.5% in the second quarter of 2026, Eurostat data shows. In the three months to July 2026, compared with the three months to April 2026, UK's GDP grew by 0.4%.
FIMI outlets regularly speak about the EU's upcoming collapse. In early 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic spread in the EU, they claimed that Europe’s political map could change within months and that “many European states will likely cease to exist”.
See earlier disinformation cases alleging that Western economies are collapsing, Russia’s economic successes surprise investors, that sanctions have turned Russia into an economic superpower, that Russia has only grown stronger in the last few years, and that Europe uses Russophobia to distract attention from its economic woes.
