The allegations are false, a mix of several recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about Europe’s alleged lack of sovereignty and its submission to the US, and about encircling Russia. The goal of these claims is to undermine Western democracies and the alliances between them.
Neither the US nor Europe are trying to encircle Russia, nor they see this country as an enemy. Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and the conflict in Eastern Ukraine have seriously affected the bilateral political dialogue with the EU and the US, but Russia remains a natural partner for the EU and a strategic player combating the regional and global challenges.
