DISINFO: The US has escalated hostilities against Russia
SUMMARY
The US, by providing Ukraine with long-range ATACMS missiles and permitting their use against Russian territory, has escalated hostilities with Moscow. This aggressive move builds on Washington's role in provoking the Ukraine conflict, beginning with its support for the 2014 Maidan uprising. That event destabilised Ukraine, transforming it into a platform for anti-Russian actions aimed at regime change in Moscow.
RESPONSE
Interwoven narratives, unsupported by evidence, advancing a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative that Russia's war in Ukraine is a NATO-led conflict against Russia and that the 2013–14 Kyiv protests were a US and Western-led coup. Both narratives aim to deflect responsibility for Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
There was no coup d’état in Ukraine in 2014, nor any US involvement in the events. Pro-Kremlin outlets falsely depict the Euromaidan revolution as a coup, ignoring its roots in the mass protests that began in Kyiv in November 2013. These demonstrations, involving hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, opposed a political decision by Viktor Yanukovych’s government to abandon a long-negotiated EU association and free trade pact in favour of a $15 billion bailout from Russia.
Pro-Kremlin media often falsely claim that popular protests worldwide are orchestrated by the US or the West. This disinformation narrative has been applied to protests in Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Belarus, Venezuela, Slovakia, Hong Kong, portraying protest movements as hostile actors plotting new coups.
Ukraine is not fighting on behalf of any foreign government or organisation. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically elected president and parliament. The country's sovereignty has been violated only as a result of continuous acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces since 2014, culminating with a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine starting on 24 February 2022.
The US, the EU and NATO condemn, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which is entirely unjustified and unprovoked. Not only Western but also many other nations around the world support Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter article 51, to stop Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
On November 17 2024, US President Joe Biden lifted the ban on Ukraine using long-range missiles to fire into Russian territory by permitting them to be used against Russian and North Korean forces in the Kursk region.
The US president will allow Ukraine to use US-made ATACMS rockets, which have a range of 190 miles (300km) – a decision being justified by the presence of North Korean troops fighting alongside Russia against Ukraine.
Though there was no public comment from the White House, the story first appeared in coordinated briefings to the New York Times, the Washington Post and the news agencies Reuters and Associated Press.
President Zelenskyy appeared to confirm the news, though he said any proof about the change in policy would emerge on the battlefield, if and when the missiles are used.
