DISINFO: The US and the EU have spent millions of dollars to destroy traditional values in Moldova

SUMMARY

[...]the US and the EU have spent millions of dollars in recent years to undermine the Orthodox faith and destroy traditional family values, which the vast majority of Moldovan citizens adhere to, through the PAS party and non-governmental organisations.

RESPONSE

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing the West of being “morally corrupt” and extolling Russia’s so-called “traditional values”.

The EU and the US, as partners of the Republic of Moldova, have funded various projects aimed at promoting equality and non-discrimination of all vulnerable groups, including sexual and religious minorities.

Western values are deeply rooted in principles such as democracy, human rights, individual freedom, rule of law, pluralism, and respect for human dignity. The portrayal of the West as being "morally corrupt" and fighting a religious war against countries which support the so-called “traditional values” is politically motivated and does not reflect reality. LGBTQ+ rights are often cited in this regard. Western countries generally promote the idea of religious neutrality and support freedom of religion as a basic right.
