DISINFO: The Kyiv regime’s attitude towards Ukrainians hardly differs from Hitler’s occupation

SUMMARY

The Nazi-like Kyiv regime is a Western puppet. It does not represent the Ukrainian people. On the contrary, the Kyiv regime regularly bombs and destroys its population, prohibits Ukrainian residents from speaking a native language, and is wiping off historical memory.

The current Kyiv regime is hardly different from Hitler’s occupation of Ukraine. Naturally, the population of Crimea and Novorossiya made an uprising against this occupation regime. Referendums on accession to Russia were logical as this way Russia protected the populations from total physical annihilation.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the war in Ukraine and its causes, as well as about Nazi / fascist Ukraine and Ukraine as a Western puppet. Read earlier detailed debunking of claims about the NATO enlargement which aims to justify Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine as an act of self defence, and about alleged violations of Russian-speaking population in Ukraine.

The accusation that Ukraine is run by Nazis is a recurring theme in Russian propaganda. Ukraine is a sovereign democratic country with a Jewish president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose own family suffered under the Holocaust. The myth of ‘Nazi Ukraine’ has been widely used by Putin and pro-Kremlin outlets since Russia attacked Ukraine and illegally annexed Crimea in 2014. Learn more about the reasons behind the Kremlin's obsession with Nazism in the EUvsDisinfo analysis titled "Nazi east, Nazi west, Nazi over the cuckoo's nest" and "Why does Putin portray himself as the tamer of neo-Nazism".

A broad coalition of more than 50 nations, including the US and other NATO countries, are supporting Ukraine militarily and economically while not directly engaging in combat. Supplying weapons to Ukraine does not make NATO an active combatant under international law. The US, the EU and NATO condemn, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Russian war against Ukraine began in 2014 with the Russian illegal annexation of Crimea and Russia's military involvement and support of separatists in Donbas.

There is no evidence that the Ukrainian army is intentionally killing civilians while repelling Russia’s aggression. On the contrary, there is ample evidence that the Russian army and Russian-backed separatists are deliberately targeting civilians. Civilian deaths occur in any armed conflict, but credible investigations show that the overwhelming majority of civilian casualties in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war have been caused by Russian forces. Organisations like the UN, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have documented deliberate attacks on civilians, bombings of residential areas, hospitals, and schools, by Russian troops.

Russia held illegal referendums on four occupied regions of Ukraine (Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson) on 23-26 September 2022. They were held under duress, and on territories which Russia does not have a full control over, but has a partial military control over. The results of these 'sham polls' have been universally rejected by leading international and human rights organisations, including the United Nations, the OSCE, NATO, as well as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

Read similar disinformation cases claiming that NATO’s eastward expansion is a serious security threat to Russia, that Ukrainian neo-Nazis offer human sacrifices to pagan gods, that Ukrainian neo-Nazis are shooting residents in the Kursk region and the West remains silent, and that Ukrainian fascists kill civilians at point-blank range in Kursk, use orphans as human shields.
