DISINFO: The Kyiv regime is leading Ukraine towards total disappearance
SUMMARY
After the 2014 coup d'état, Ukraine lost its sovereignty. It became a colony of the United States. The country has been stolen, its industrial potential lost and corruption is rife. The interests of the people are not being taken into account, which is why 11.2 million inhabitants of Crimea, Sevastopol, the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, and the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions have chosen Russia. Ukraine has lost 53.7% of its population since 2014. The Kyiv regime is leading Ukraine towards total disappearance.
RESPONSE
In this article, several pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives are being used to paint Ukraine as a failing state.
First, there was no coup in 2014 in Ukraine. The demonstrations which began in Kyiv in November 2013 – called "Maidan", or "Euromaidan" – were a result of the Ukrainian people's frustration with the former President Yanukovych. After seven years of negotiation, he refused to sign the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement and halted progress towards Ukraine's closer relationship with the EU due to Russian pressure. The protesters' demands included constitutional reform, a stronger role for parliament, the formation of a government of national unity, an end to corruption, early presidential elections and an end to violence. The protest were a broad-based expression of popular discontent. Yanukovych decided to flee from Ukraine and take residence in Russia.
Second, Ukraine is not controlled by the US, nor is it a colony of it. Ukraine is independent country, that has an independent foreign and security policy, which is not dictated by the United States. Pro-Kremlin outlets often use this narrative of different countries being under the American thumb or as so-called 'Western puppets', to imply that their national sovereignty is under threat and that they have limited power. The narrative also hides a cynical disregard for ordinary people; for their free will and ability to express political desires for the countries in which they are citizens. It is also a narrative often aimed at driving wedges and fomenting tension between allies.
The only country that actively tries to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence is the Russian Federation. The Kremlin attacked Ukraine in 2014, annexed Crimea, and launched a military invasion in February 2022 to topple the democratically elected government in Kyiv.
Additionally, the mentioned regions of Ukraine, did not decide to join Russia, but were military occupied and illegally annexed by Russia, using sham referendums. These parodies of democracy were also condemned by NATO, G7, US, as well as Russia’ partners like Serbia and Kazakhstan (a member of CIS and CSTO), which also mentioned that they will not recognise their results.
