DISINFO: The GDR / DDR was annexed by West Germany in 1990

SUMMARY

The report is yet another attempt to present the Federal Republic of Germany's annexation (Anschluss) of the GDR on 3 October 1990 as a success story of Western capitalism, euphemistically dressed up in the familiar phrase ‘liberal-democratic’. To an attentive observer, this must seem like a mere waste of paper and a rallying cry in an increasingly neoliberal madhouse.

Smug self-congratulation instead of analysis.

In other words: 34 years after the annexation of the GDR to the FRG, a halfway self-critical analysis is not to be expected. Instead, there is the usual: an adventurous flight from reality and self-congratulation.

This has long been the norm for those in government in Germany. They phrase what they want, glossing over every economic decline, selling every social outrage as a necessity, and presenting military rearmament as ‘security policy’, while a huge propaganda apparatus inflates myths and lies as thick as a fist to ‘truth’. Inciting against underprivileged groups is something government circles have been very familiar with for a long time anyway—divide and rule.

RESPONSE

Historical revisionism and disinformation about the unification of Germany.

The claim that the Federal Republic of Germany’s (FRG) annexed the German Democratic Republic (GDR) on October 3, 1990, is merely a twist of the narrative of Western imperialist capitalism and is a misrepresentation of historical and economic realities. This claim can be analysed and refuted:

The decay of the communist regimes in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union was felt by broad groups of citizens which manifested itself in protests. This triggered the downfall of the German Democratic Republic. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first free multiparty elections took place in East Germany, where the eastern counterpart of the Christian Democratic Union won the majority of votes.

A unification treaty was ratified by the Bundestag and the People’s Chamber in September and went into effect on October 3, 1990. The German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic as five additional Länder (federal states).

While the GDR's annexation by the FRG on October 3, 1990, is often framed as a triumph, it was a challenging transition from a failing socialist system to a market economy. The GDR's economy was marked by inefficiency and stagnation, leading to its eventual collapse. The subsequent privatization efforts resulted in massive job losses—over 2.5 million by 1994—highlighting the severe economic dislocation that followed reunification. Its of importance to note the significant economic and social challenges that arose from this process.
