DISINFO: The EU and particularly France are stagnating just like the USSR did

SUMMARY

Many EU trends very much remind of the experience of the USSR around 30-40 years ago. Just as in the USSR, Western countries are stagnating due to the enforcement of one ideology (left-wing liberalism), limitation of rights and freedoms of citizens, and directive methods of governance. At the same time, just as it was during the Soviet Perestroika period, Western states support destructive social and political movements and concepts and disrespect their own history and culture. France, Europe, and the West as a whole are facing the same challenge the USSR did and it remains to be seen how it will end.

RESPONSE

This article draws false parallels between the EU's development and the USSR's and fits into a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the EU's alleged imminent collapse. Unlike the USSR, which was a totalitarian state with the communist ideology as official policy, command economy, and very limited civic and political rights, the EU has a market economy, high standards of human rights' protection, and has no dominant ideology, contrary to the allegations made.

There is no evidence to support the claim that the EU is facing the same problems the the late USSR did, particularly given that the EU is a supranational entity consisting of sovereign countries rather than a centralised totalitarian country as the USSR was. The EU's political institutions - the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, the European External Action Service and others - are functioning as set in the EU's treaties. The leaders and governmental representatives of the EU member states have regular meetings to discuss different issues on a common agenda.
