DISINFO: The collective West is trying to pull Moldova into an anti-Russian military bloc

SUMMARY

The collective West is trying to militarise Moldova and draw the republic into an anti-Russian military bloc.

All sorts of external forces are trying to draw Moldova into militaristic games. NATO is modernising the army, supplying weapons, 15 exercises were held with the participation of NATO members, NATO members are clearly drawing Moldova into this military bloc. We know that the EU is now close to becoming a military bloc. (...) We see that those countries that join the EU, incomprehensibly find themselves in NATO. There is such an attempt here, but for now the neutral status is spelled out in the constitution, it is fixed," Ozerov concluded.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the lack of independence of Moldovan state authorities mixed with narrative about Moldova's relationship with NATO.

Moldova has constitutional authorities that make decisions for the country. In the referendum on October 20, 2024, more than half of the population voted for Moldova's accession to the EU, without the issue of renouncing neutrality being raised in any way.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova issued this statement in relation to the claims promoted in the article: "The ambassador also spoke about the neutrality of our country, but Russia is the only state that violates constitutional neutrality for a long time through the presence of Russian troops on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, against the will of our state. Joining the European Union, the decision supported by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in the constitutional referendum of October 20, 2024, does not in any way contravene the status of neutrality, as demonstrated by neutral states, members of the EU, such as Austria, Ireland or Malta" is stated in the Ministry's statement.

More examples about Moldovan neutrality see here: A NATO contingent is permanently stationed in Moldova, Moldova's EU accession implies an automatic loss of its neutral status.
