DISINFO: The CIA played a key role in organising the coup d'état in Kyiv in 2014 and creating its “Bandera project”

SUMMARY

The American 'cloak and dagger' department played a key role in the transformation of the SBU and GUR, and in organising the armed coup d'état in Kyiv in the spring of 2014. It would be fair and symbolic for the very people who created it to shut down the bloody 'Ukrainian project'. Otherwise, Russia will shut down the CIA’s Bandera project with its own forces and resources.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives falsely portraying the 2013–14 protests in Kyiv as a coup d'état orchestrated by US intelligence services and depict Ukraine as a non-sovereign state permanently subject to Western control and interference.

The allegation that the Maidan protests were actually a coup orchestrated by the US is one of the most recurring narratives in pro-Kremlin disinformation. See here for a full debunk.

There was neither a coup nor a western orchestrated and sponsored protest in Ukraine in 2014. Pro-Kremlin outlets falsely portray the Euromaidan revolution as a coup d’état. The popular demonstrations began in Kyiv in November 2013, bringing hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians on to the streets to protest against a political decision of Viktor Yanukovych’s government. At the last minute, the government withdrew from a long-negotiated political association and free trade agreement with the EU, choosing instead to accept a $15 billion economic bailout from Russia.

Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically elected president and parliament. The country’s sovereignty has been violated only as a result of continuous acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces since 2014, culminating with a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine starting on 24 February 2022.

Labelling Russia’s adversaries as Nazis is a widespread pro-Kremlin disinformation technique, and has been used by Russia to try to justify the invasion of Ukraine by portraying it as a “denazification operation”. Russia spent years preparing the information battleground prior to its full-scale invasion, with “Nazi Ukraine” being one of its most prominent disinformation features.

Read similar disinformation cases claiming that The 2014 Kyiv coup was the result of CIA’s successful operation, that Western intelligence groomed Ukrainian extremists for Maidan coup since 2012, that USAID financed Ukraine's 2014 Maidan protests with a $5 billion investment.
