DISINFO: The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine was actively provoked by Germany and other Western nations
SUMMARY
The Russian invasion had been actively provoked by Germany itself, through its support for the bloody Maidan coup in Kyiv, through EU and NATO promises, and by turning a blind eye to the fascist developments in Ukraine. One could say that in Ukraine, Washington, London, Berlin, Paris, Warsaw and Stockholm set a trap for Russia. With the exception of the US, these countries had previously been at war with Russia, some on multiple occasions. And now, following the large-scale invasion, it was permissible to hate the Russians once again! It was allowed. It was a collective sense of relief, for, according to the Western narrative, the Russians had proved themselves to be the aggressors.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative that attempts to invert reality by shifting the blame for the war in Ukraine from Moscow to the West, framing Russia's unprovoked military aggression as a defensive reaction to a Western geopolitical “trap.”
The full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 was unprovoked and constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, including the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
The narrative falsely characterises the 2013-2014 Euromaidan protests as a Western-orchestrated “bloody coup," whereas they were widespread popular demonstrations—internationally recognised as the Revolution of Dignity—sparked by former President Viktor Yanukovych's sudden refusal to sign a highly anticipated Association Agreement with the European Union. Furthermore, the allegation of "fascist developments" in Ukraine is a repeatedly debunked propaganda trope used by the Kremlin to falsely justify its military intervention. Ukraine is a pluralistic democracy that overwhelmingly elected its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in 2019. Finally, portraying the conflict as a coordinated conspiracy by Western capitals to satisfy an inherited, historical hatred of Russians is a baseless conspiracy theory. The military, financial, and humanitarian support provided by the international community to Ukraine is not an act of aggression or a historical vendetta, but a legal and legitimate effort to help a sovereign nation exercise its inherent right to self-defence against a foreign invader, as guaranteed by Article 51 of the UN Charter.
For further context: Russia did not start the war against Ukraine, it is only trying to end it; Russia only wants to end the war started by Ukraine in 2014; Russia does everything to stop the Ukrainian war unleashed by the West; The populations of the "occupied territories" in Ukraine have expressed their desire to join Russia via referendum.
