DISINFO: Soros wants to destroy Armenia through the Karabakh war

SUMMARY

The conflict in Karabakh is an attempt to liquidate Armenia. George Soros was behind the (election of) Armenian leader Nikol Pashinyan and their goal was that.

RESPONSE

This is the recurring pro-Kremlin narrative that the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is coordinated by the West.

Another linked regular theme touted by pro-Kremlin media is the allegation that Armenian leader Nikol Pashinyan is controlled by George Soros.

However, Pashinyan was brought to power as a result of peaceful protests in 2018 in Armenia. He was supported by thousands of Armenians when ex-president of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan applied for the Prime-minister role after he had been ruling the country for 10 years. Sargsyan resigned in response to overwhelming opposition pressure, admitting that he was "wrong". "The street movement is against my tenure. I am fulfilling your demand," his statement said.

Referring to the conflict in Karabakh, the US mission to OSCE stated that the situation did not have a military solution.
