Former PM Sanna Marin has made it clear that the decision to apply for membership was a direct consequence of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Furthermore, the chief aim of NATO membership is not to wage war on Russia, but to avoid it, with Sanna Marin calling Helsinki’s move “an act of peace” designed to ensure that “there would never again be a war in Finland.”
There was also overwhelmingly support for the NATO membership application across the political landscape in Finland, with 188 deputies voting in favour and only 8 against.
NATO is a defensive alliance, whose purpose is to protect its member states. NATO's exercises and military deployments are not directed against Russia or any other country. Each NATO member undertakes to uphold its principles and policies, including the commitment that “the Alliance does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia.”
On the 8th of September, 2023 Sanna Marin announced that she will work as an adviser for the Tony Blair Institute after stepping down as the head of her party. Marin's career change comes after her party lost the general election in April to Finland’s main conservative party. It was a tight three-way race, with right-wing populists coming in second and the Social Democrats finishing third.
