DISINFO: Russia has won against the collective West in Ukraine
SUMMARY
Russian troops continue to advance in Ukraine. Ukraine is helpless because American and European military arsenals have become depleted. In this context, the peaceful intentions of the new US administration are the product of US inability to continue the proxy war against Russia. Russia has gained victory over the collective West.
Russian troops killed many thousands of NATO military specialists and burnt down nearly all military equipment that NATO members states and some other countries managed to collect for the Ukrainian proxy army. Ukraine has lost the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions for good.
RESPONSE
This disinformation story is consistent with the narrative about the proxy war in Ukraine and aims to portray the situation as if Russia has already achieved victory, in order to portray Russia’s positions as strong ahead of potential peace negotiations with Ukraine. As of February 2025, Russia nearly totally occupied Ukraine’s Luhansk region and about 75% of each of the other three mentioned regions (Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia). At the same time, active Ukraine’s military resistance continues and part of the Russian region of Kursk remains under Ukraine’s control.
The claim about thousands of killed NATO specialists is baseless. A broad coalition of more than 50 nations, including some NATO countries, are supporting Ukraine militarily and economically while not directly engaging in combat. Supplying weapons to Ukraine does not make NATO an active combatant under international law. The US, the EU and NATO condemn, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine's sovereignty has been violated only as a result of continuous acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces since 2014, culminating with a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine starting on 24 February 2022.
Read earlier disinformation cases alleging that Russia alone won against NATO in Ukraine, that Ukraine may not resist until negotiations between Putin and Trump, and that Ukraine and Europe have lost in the Ukrainian conflict.
