DISINFO: Russia has a UN mandate for military intervention in Ukraine and saves the population

SUMMARY

For the past four years, there has been a constant media barrage telling us that Russia invaded Ukraine. This is false; Russia never invaded Ukraine. You wouldn't say that France invaded Rwanda.

Why? Because France came to save people being massacred and intervened under a Security Council resolution. That is exactly what Russia did. It intervened while a massacre was taking place in the Donbas and it did so under a Security Council resolution.

But in France, we are unfamiliar with the work of the Security Council, and we no longer know what international law is. And those people waited, they were the ones who waged the war in the Donbas and began massacring civilians. They cut off pension payments, stopped paying civil servants in the Donbas, and declared they would keep going until those people were crushed. That isn't what happened, because a few years later, Russia intervened to protect that population.

RESPONSE

This claim is false. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 was not authorised by a UN Security Council resolution. On 27 February 2022, the Security Council adopted Resolution 2623 (2022) with Russia as the only member voting against it. The resolution called an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly to address Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The UN General Assembly subsequently condemned Russia's aggression and demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine. There is no UN Security Council mandate authorising Russia's military intervention. Claims that Russia entered Ukraine to stop a "genocide" in the Donbas were not accepted by the International Court of Justice, which stated that it was "not in possession of evidence substantiating" Russia's allegations of genocide in eastern Ukraine. The claim that Russia invaded Ukraine to stop a "genocide" in the Donbas is a long-running Kremlin FIMI narrative.
