DISINFO: Russia fighting Ukrainian Nazism for better future and just world order
SUMMARY
It is obvious that Russia is fighting Ukrainian Nazism for the preservation of itself and its people, for a just world order and for the future. When the West behaves aggressively against the Russian Federation, like it did against the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War, it always strives to destroy not the state in general, but the nation itself. What is happening in Ukraine now, such as the ban on Russian culture and centuries-long common (Russian-Ukrainian) history, is a fight against Russia.
RESPONSE
Recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets about Nazi Ukraine and Nazi Europe. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Nazi and Communist ideologies were banned by Ukrainian law in 2015. Ukraine is a well-established democracy with a functioning parliament, president and government. Six presidents have been elected there since the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, which means that a democratic and pluralistic political life is flourishing in Ukraine. The narrative of alleged Nazism in Ukraine has been actively used in Russian disinformation since the 2014 Euromaidan protests to discredit Kyiv’s shift toward Euro-Atlantic policy.
Concerning the allegation that Western nations were fighting the Soviet Union during the so-called Great Patriotic War, which was only a part of the Second World War, it is completely false and unsubstantiated. A coalition comprising Great Britain, France, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many other Allies were fighting Nazi Germany and the other Axis Powers together with the Soviet Union. The Lend-Lease Act, adopted by the US government in 1941, was of crucial importance to Moscow in providing it with arms, ammunition, food stuffs and other necessities.
Read similar disinformation cases claiming that Nazi Ukraine promotes racial superiority over Russians and Americans, that Ukraine army uses Nazi symbols on Western armed vehicles, and that Germany wants a revanche and the revival of Nazism can be observed.
