Romania was the first state to recognise the independence of the Republic of Moldova, immediately after the proclamation of the independence of the new state (August, 1991).
The basis of the bilateral relationship are established by the Declaration on the establishment of a strategic partnership between Romania and the Republic of Moldova for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova (signed in Bucharest, on April 27, 2010). Romania strongly and constantly supports the efforts of the Republic of Moldova in approaching the EU, including through the visa liberalisation and the signature of the Association Agreement.
Moldova is the main recipient of Romanian foreign assistance. Romania has supported Moldova both economically, through private investment, loans and aid granted by the Romanian state, and cultural and educational, through the financing of various projects in the education field.
