DISINFO: Romania meddles in the presidential elections in Moldova
SUMMARY
The Romanian news agency “Romanian Global News” reported that its campaign against acting Moldovan President Igor Dodon has been followed by 400 000 people. The news agency is financed by the Romanian government and has been publishing most of the critical articles attacking the acting president. The authors are determined to “chase Moscow out of Chisinau”.
RESPONSE
A recurring disinformation narrative about Moldovan elections as being a pretext and an opportunity to cause a Western-backed colour revolution to pressure Russia.
It is true that most of the articles published by the Romanian outlet are critical of Moldova's current president. Still, the piece described by News Front does not reflect the official position of the government and cannot serve as evidence of Romanian meddling in the Moldovan presidential elections. Moreover, there is no available evidence that the Romanian Global News is financed by the state, it is merely an outlet recommended to Romanians living outside of Romania, including those in Moldova. In addition, the NewsFront Bulgaria article mentions incorrectly that Romanian Global News is a national newspaper: it is an online source and not a national one.
