DISINFO: People who refuse the coronavirus vaccine may have to be isolated, Merkel said
SUMMARY
The introduction of “Covid passports” which register the tests that you did is a way of making a selection among people. This may also turn vaccination from voluntary to mandatory, and we heard Angela Merkel saying that if some people refuse to get vaccinated maybe it will be necessary to adopt measures or to isolate them socially, which is something very serious.
RESPONSE
This is part of a pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign about the Covid-19 and vaccination.
The claim is deliberately misleading. The actual words of Chancellor Angela Merkel were:
“If some people don’t want to be vaccinated, then perhaps we will have to make a distinction, then perhaps they won’t be able to do certain things”,
which is very different from saying that they will be “socially isolated”. German authorities have always maintained that, since Covid-19 vaccination is not mandatory in Germany, there won’t be any discrimination between those already vaccinated and those who are not. In November 2020, Merkel affirmed: “Nobody will be forced to be vaccinated, it is a voluntary decision”. So far, there are no plans to make the Covid-19 vaccine compulsory in any EU country.
