DISINFO: Out of 3000 articles published by SouthFront, only 3 contain disinformation

SUMMARY

Let’s take a closer look at accusations against SouthFront put forward by Euvsdisinfo, a propaganda unit of the EU East Stratcom Task Force. Since the start of 2020, SouthFront has released about 3,000 articles. Pro-NATO propagandists found a grand total of 3 (0.001% of the total) that they can use to back up their claim that SouthFront supposedly promotes some disinformation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESPONSE

EUvsDisinfo has no affiliation to any NATO structures. EUvsDisinfo is produced by the European External Actions Service and tasked with detecting, documenting and debunking pro-Kremlin disinformation. In 2020, until mid-May, South Front is the source of 35 cases of disinformation. On some occasions, several cases have been detected in one and the same article - examples here and here. The disinformation has been published in more than 20 articles, of those, 17 have been devoted to the COVID-19 outbreak. Additionally, the South Front team will get a двойка (F) for maths. 3 out of 3000 is not “0.001 per cent”, but rather 0,1 per cent. More about our mandate and working methods here. SouthFront's connections to Russia are well documented and detailed here.

Disclaimer

Cases in the EUvsDisinfo database focus on messages in the international information space that are identified as providing a partial, distorted, or false depiction of reality and spread key pro-Kremlin messages. This does not necessarily imply, however, that a given outlet is linked to the Kremlin or editorially pro-Kremlin, or that it has intentionally sought to disinform. EUvsDisinfo publications do not represent an official EU position, as the information and opinions expressed are based on media reporting and analysis of the East Stratcom Task Force.
