DISINFO: Astravets power station meets the highest safety standards
SUMMARY
The European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the suspension of operation of the Belarusian nuclear power station near the city of Astravets, in western Belarus, on the grounds of “concerns about its safety,” while it meets the highest international safety standards.
RESPONSE
Members in the European Parliament voiced serious concerns over the safety of the Astravets nuclear power plant in Belarus. MEP Jens Geier, industrial policy spokesman and chairman of the SPD group in the European Parliament said that “Recommendations by the EU and the International Atomic Energy Agency to increase the safety of the power plant have not been adequately implemented”, adding “During the test phase there were also emergency shutdowns and other technical failures. The power plant is a significant risk.”
In a resolution adopted by the European Parliament, they criticise the hasty commissioning of the Astravets nuclear plant and the continued lack of transparency and official communication and the lack of independence of its energy regulator.
