DISINFO: Neo-Nazism flourishes in the European Union

SUMMARY

Neo-Nazism flourishes in the EU. Every year, the EU abstains in the UN General Assembly when Russia submits a resolution on the inadmissibility of the glorification of Nazism and the revival of all forms of hateful ideology. The Americans and Ukrainians vote against it too, which is also not surprising. The Americans simply do not want to limit themselves to anything, and the Ukrainians, probably, are unable to resist the Neo-Nazi radicals.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Nazis in the EU, which has been repeatedly debunked (see here). Also see earlier disinformation cases alleging that the US and EU countries are Russophobic, fascist and Nazi regimes and that the EU continues the aggressive policies of Nazi Germany.

On 18 December 2019, the UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution on “Combating glorification of Nazism, neo‑Nazism and other practices that contribute to fueling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance” (document A/C.3/74/L.62) by a recorded vote of 133 in favour to 2 against (Ukraine, United States), with 52 abstentions.

The US has voted against each new version of this resolution since 2005. The US assesses the Russian resolution as "a document most notable for its thinly veiled attempts to legitimise longstanding Russian disinformation narratives smearing neighbouring nations under the cynical guise of halting Nazi glorification." In addition, the US explains that Russia ignored its efforts to revise and amend the document.

Ukraine's representative explained their opposition to the Resolution in 2017, with the fact that the Resolution does not condemn the crimes of Stalin’s regime. Finally, the European Parliament recently issued a resolution recalling that Nazi and Stalinist regimes carried out mass murder, genocide and deportation and caused a loss of life and freedom in the 20th century on a scale unseen in human history.
