DISINFO: NATO weapons pushing Moldova towards war
SUMMARY
[...t]he worst thing is that Moldova is being pushed towards war. Citizens are being told fairy tales about the “Russian threat,” while NATO is pumping weapons into the country and its neighbors.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Moldova as a belligerent NATO puppet, spread in the context of Russia's full scale aggression against Ukraine. Since 2022, Moldova has increased its military budget, in order to strengthen its defence capacities. Moldova’s leadership explained (min.34-38) many times that it is only for defense purposes.
NATO is not supplying arms to Moldova, nor could it do that. Moldova is not a member of NATO and has only cooperation agreements with this alliance, within the framework of the partnership established back in 1992. The latest announcement (min. 12.40) by the head of the Moldovan mission to NATO, in January 2025, shows that 18 assistance and advisory projects are currently being implemented between the two parties, but they do not involve the delivery of weapons. "There are new projects, related to combating false information and propaganda, to the professional development of the armed forces, new instruments have also appeared, such as the resilience program," he said.
The military equipment that currently comes into the possession of the national army is made either from the state budget of the Republic of Moldova or individual donations from some states.
