DISINFO: NATO summit demonstrated an unprecedented anti-Russian charge

SUMMARY

NATO summit demonstrated an unprecedented anti-Russian charge and reaffirmed the alliance's claims to be the world's policeman. Russia is well aware of the detrimental consequences of the bloc's policy for international and regional security. In this regard, the course taken by Russia to build up its defence capability is today uncontested. In the West, many talk about an aggressive and expansionist Russia, but the facts suggest otherwise.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative that falsely portrays NATO as an aggressive anti-Russian and Russophobic organisation that intends to be a gendarme in the international arena.

The fact that many countries want to collaborate or join NATO near the Russian Federation is not the result of a mythical will to encircle and conquer Russia by the alliance but the result of a considered security analysis. In this analysis Russian actions, threats and capabilities pushes countries to find a defensive military alliance to preserve the states's integrity.

The primary aim of the alliance is to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security and territorial integrity of its member states.

For more than twenty-five years, NATO has worked to build a partnership with Russia, including through the NATO-Russia Council (NRC). While NATO stands by its international commitments, Russia continues to breach the values, principles, trust, and commitments outlined in agreed documents that underpin the NATO-Russia relationship. The NATO Summit Communiqué issued in Brussels in June 2021, clearly stated: "Until Russia demonstrates compliance with international law and its international obligations and responsibilities, there can be no return to “business as usual”. We will continue to respond to the deteriorating security environment by enhancing our deterrence and defence posture, including by a forward presence in the eastern part of the Alliance. NATO does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia."
