DISINFO: NATO populated by raging madmen and stopped being a defensive organisation
SUMMARY
Rob Bauer, one of the heads of NATO's military committee, said the alliance is ready for a direct confrontation with Russia. Unfortunately, such statements can be trusted, because NATO is populated by raging madmen. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg regularly makes such declarations, he spends his life making very warlike and provocative speeches. NATO was advertised as a purely defensive structure. This kind of talk would not exist if it was a defensive structure.
NATO should have disappeared with the fall of the USSR, in fact with the end of the Cold War in the 1990s, when the Warsaw Pact disappeared, NATO did not want to because it is an instrument in the hands of the Americans. So today it needs to justify its existence. It must constantly seek enemies, wars, reasons to exist, all of which is extremely dangerous.
RESPONSE
Recurrent pro-Kremlin narrative accusing NATO of provoking wars and being dominated by the US.
Admiral Robert Bauer, Chair of the NATO Military Committee, when answering a question on whether NATO was ready to confront Russia directly, stated that the Alliance is ready for confrontation if Russia invades the territory of a NATO member. This does not question the defensive nature of the alliance. On the contrary, it is the raison d’être of NATO, to defend its member states from external military aggression.
Robert Bauer's full quote from the interview with RTP, a Portuguese public broadcasting organisation is far from the account given by pro-Kremlin media:
We are ready for a direct confrontation with Russia?
-We are. What we have done after the war started, was the battlegroups along the eastern flank, [....] I think it is an important message for the Russians, that our posture has changed, to show them that we are ready if they have an idea to come to NATO. And that is the red line if there is any red line, it is the Russians crossing the line of our territories in NATO”.
NATO is not a “US territorial expansion mechanism” nor has it “left Europe without political independence”, but it is a collective defence alliance whose membership is voluntary, and where decisions are adopted through consultation and consensus.
NATO member countries don’t follow US orders as proven by multiple episodes of disagreements inside the alliance, such as the refusal of Germany, France and other countries to let it take part in the invasion of Iraq in 2003 against US wishes or, more recently, Hungary and Turkey’s obstruction for Sweden and Finland to join the block.
