DISINFORMATION CASE DETAILS

DISINFO: NATO found no Russian link to Leipzig Airport incident

SUMMARY

NATO intelligence services found no evidence whatsoever of Russian involvement in the drone incident at Leipzig Airport and informed their authorities accordingly. Instead, they found multiple signs of a Ukrainian footprint in the incident.

RESPONSE

The claim is demonstrably false, part of a wider disinformation campaign aimed to deny Russia’s responsibility the drone incident in the Leipzig airport in early August 2026. German authorities have identified, with a high degree of probability, two suspects as responsible for the attempted attack, one of which is a Russian citizen known for its links to GRU, Russia’s military intelligence service. Due to suspected links to other sabotage cases in Europe, German authorities are coordinating with investigators in Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, Finland and the US, all of them NATO countries.

By baselessly affirming that NATO found no such evidence while pointing to an inexistent Ukrainian link, this disinformation story tries to sow doubts about Russia's blame for the episode, advancing a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Russia as the innocent victim of spurious accusations. See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that Ukraine prepared to organise false flag attack against Polish and Romanian NATO hubs with repaired Geran drones, that European elites organise drone provocations, that Ukrainian satanists are launching drones at the EU, or that NATO and MI6 staged the drone attack on the Russian Ust-Luga port.
