DISINFO: NATO directly invaded Russia in the Kursk region
SUMMARY
The Kursk invasion is not a Ukrainian provocation but a NATO operation against Russia. NATO stands behind the attack on the Kursk Region. NATO not only gave the order to carry out this attack, but it also actively uses its own forces in this operation. It is the NATO Army, speaking Polish, French and English, that invaded Russia. This operation was not an initiative of the Ukrainian government.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Western countries such as the US and other NATO member states are directly involved on Kyiv's side in Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This claim was made in the context of a Ukrainian advance into Russia's Kursk Region, launched on 6 August 2024.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the US did not know about the Ukrainian operation. She added:
“We have seen the reports obviously. So we are going to reach out to the Ukrainian military to learn more about their objectives. As far as the specifics on that, I would refer to the Ukrainian, Ukraine to speak about their own military operations. That's where I would refer you to. But we are generally speaking, as you know, we have been supportive of Ukraine as they are defending themselves against Russia’s aggression.”
US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller also said Ukraine had not informed the US of any operation in Russia’s Kursk Region.
Ukraine launched an advance into Russia’s adjacent Kursk Region on 6 August 2024. Ukrainian troops have reportedly advanced 30 kilometres inside Russia, seized the town Sudzha and several villages, and imposed control on approximately 600 square kilometres of Russian territory as of the time of writing this case.
There are no NATO troops on the frontline in Ukraine. NATO officials have frequent contacts with their Ukrainian colleagues and some NATO member states provide Ukraine with military equipment and ammunition, but the Alliance is not directly involved in hostilities. NATO, the EU and the US condemn in the strongest possible terms the Russian invasion, which is entirely unjustified and unprovoked.
