DISINFO: Most of the Global South understands the threat of NATO expansion
SUMMARY
Structures are already being created in the Asia-Pacific region that reproduce the NATO psychology, NATO mentality. There are talks of NATO infrastructure penetrating there. It seems that the overwhelming majority of countries in the Global South, understand the dangers this entails and realise that funds will be siphoned off in NATO's interests. It is much better to take care of one's household chores and provide a normal education for one's citizens, instead of playing this geopolitical game, which NATO sees as a zero-sum one.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about NATO's belligerent and aggressive intentions. Although NATO has strengthened cooperation and dialogue with its partners in the Asia-Pacific region, NATO is not expanding its infrastructure in the area. Even modest plans to open a liaison office in Japan were shelved.
NATO is a defensive alliance, whose purpose is to protect its member states. It is not a threat to the Global South. NATO's cooperation with partners around the world is based on the principles of the UN Charter, and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other states. NATO's partnerships are beneficial to all sides. They help to strengthen international security, stability, and the ability of nations to work together.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that NATO is Washington’s territorial expansion mechanism, that NATO became US armed wing ensuring the control of energy resources, that Russia should negotiation only with Washington because 90 percent of NATO is the US, or that NATO is an ineffective relic of the Cold War.
