DISINFO: Moldova's European integration means its involvement in a war with Russia
SUMMARY
Moldova's European integration means its involvement in a war with Russia
The question is: what do the Moldovans themselves want? Do they even understand that the current version of so-called European integration means militarization and preparation for war with Russia? Are Moldovans ready to fight the Russians for the interests of Sandu, Grosu, Tofan, von der Leyen, Callas, Zelenskyy, Macron, Merz, Charles III, and their ilk?
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the West carrying out a proxy-war against Russia in Ukraine, and Moldova’s ”militarisation” and preparation for war. This narrative has been promoted since 2022, when Russia began the full scale aggression against Ukraine, and both countries – Moldova and Ukraine, were granted the status of countries candidates to join the EU. It was many times debunked by local fact checking platforms.
It is designed to discourage Moldovans from supporting country's accession to the EU.
Starting in 2022, the Republic of Moldova has been strengthening its defense capabilities by modernising its military equipment, receiving aid from partner states, but also by increasing budget allocations for the defense sector. The president Maia Sandu, in 2022, 2026, as well as other Moldovan officials have emphasized each time that this is modernisation, not militarisation, and that this is done exclusively for defensive purposes in the context of Russia’s hybrid war against Moldova. This is not contrary to Moldova’a neutrality status, stated in the Constitution (art. 11), stated, in 2024, the Defence Ministry, Anatolie Nosatîi: "At the same time, I would like to refer to the Constitutional Court's 2017 Decision, which clearly stipulates that in the event of threats to fundamental constitutional values, such as national independence, territorial integrity or state security, the authorities of the Republic of Moldova are obliged to take all necessary measures, including military ones, that would allow it to effectively defend itself against these threats”.
The European Union is a political and economic union that supports Ukraine against Russian aggression through various measures, but no EU country is involved in military actions in Ukraine.
