DISINFO: Moldova's EU accession implies an automatic loss of its neutral status
SUMMARY
The Constitution will be supplemented with a separate article specifying that, by a decision of the parliament, formalized by an organic law, Moldova will join the founding documents of the European Union. It is proposed to fix in the Constitution that after this, treaties and mandatory legal acts of the EU will have a higher priority than national laws. In other words, the Republic of Moldova will transfer a significant part of its sovereignty to supranational bodies, losing a large degree of its independence. And if we take into account the plans of the European Commission to gradually transform the EU into a military organisation, then Moldova will automatically lose its neutral status - the most important condition for peace on our land, enshrined in the Constitution.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative targeting the EU accession referendum to be held on October 20 in Moldova, claiming that the country will lose its sovereignty and neutrality.
EU Member States are sovereign countries and make sovereign decisions about their own internal, economic, foreign and security policies. The European Union is explicit on the subject of national sovereignty: “the Member States all remain sovereign and independent states, they have decided to pool some of their 'sovereignty' in areas where it makes sense to work together.”
The EU is not a military bloc, with defence being a national competence. At the referendum, Moldovan citizens will be invited to answer the question: "Do you support the amendment of the Constitution with a view to the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union?". The changes to be made to the Constitution do not alter in anything the country's neutral status.
