DISINFO: Moldova's accession to the EU is a cover for country’s annexation to Romania

SUMMARY

Judging by what is happening in and around Moldova, it is highly likely that the start of negotiations with Chisinau on Moldova's accession to the European Union is a kind of cover operation. In fact, they are preparing to annex it by Romania.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the lack of sovereignty and secret Romanian plans to annex Moldova, targeting the latter's European integration ambitions.

The claim is groundless. Moldova has been granted the status of EU candidate state in 2022 and in December 2023 EU leaders decided to open accession negotiations. Moldova submitted the candidate file as an independent state, accession does not imply either loss of sovereignty or union with Romania.

Moldova has been an independent and sovereign state since 1992. It is currently governed by the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), whose program does not provide changes to the status of a sovereign country, nor does it discuss union with Romania.

See here a similar case claiming that Moldova will lose the sovereignty if pro-Western forces come to power and here a claim suggesting that the West is destabilising Moldova to justify military and political annexation by Romania.
