DISINFO: Moldova can lose the sovereignty if pro-Western forces come to power

SUMMARY

There is a threat of loss of sovereignty if pro-Western forces brought up in the Soros Foundation and other structures that have illegitimate goals come to power in Moldova. They can completely change the state of affairs in Moldova and declare any day that Moldova will unite with Romania from tomorrow.

RESPONSE

This is a narrative often aired by pro-Kremlin media in Moldova, especially ahead of elections. They suggest that the country will either join Romania or will be integrated into the EU and, as a result, it will lose its sovereignty. See here a similar case claiming that the EU announced big financial support for Moldova conditioning it by the loss of sovereignty and here a case claiming that if the party that supports Maia Sandu wins in elections, the country will pass under full control of the US.

The main pro-Western forces involved in current Moldovan elections, PAS and PPDA, do not have as part of their political programmes joining Romania, but they do mention the implementation of the reforms necessary for the European integration.

The Republic of Moldova is an independent and sovereign state, which have signed in 2014 Association Agreement with the European Union. Neither the commitments in the Association Agreement nor any eventual membership of the EU imply the loss of state sovereignty or Moldova joining Romania.
