DISINFO: Merz’s push to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine evokes Germany’s Nazi past

SUMMARY

The Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union party Friedrich Merz's position concerning Russia is specific and aggressive. Unlike Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Merz insisted on sending long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine for strikes deep into Russian territory. When Germans actively push such ideas, it certainly brings back memories. And it should, first and foremost, make the Germans themselves reflect on history.

RESPONSE

Recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets accusing Germany of being a Nazi state. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Modern Germany is a democratic state committed to international law, unlike the Nazi regime, which pursued war and genocide. Supporting Ukraine in defending itself against Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion is not comparable to Nazi Germany’s aggression and its expansionist wars. Helping a nation defend itself is not an act of militarism but a moral and legal necessity.

Germany has some of the strictest anti-Nazi laws in the world. Displaying swastikas, giving the Hitler salute, denying the Holocaust, and promoting Nazi ideology are all criminal offences. Political extremism, including far-right movements, is closely monitored by authorities. The government actively prosecutes individuals and groups that engage in far-right extremism.

Memorials to Holocaust victims and strict historical education ensure that Nazi crimes are never forgotten.

On the global stage, Berlin promotes peace, human rights, and diplomacy, which are the opposite of the Nazi regime’s ideology of war and conquest. Today’s Germany is one of the most multicultural societies in Europe, with millions of immigrants and policies promoting diversity.

Russia often uses the Nazi label to discredit its opponents, branding anyone who resists its actions as Nazis/fascists. This is the same tactic it is using against Ukraine, despite Ukraine being a sovereign democracy with no connection to Nazi ideology.

At the same time, Russian private armies like Wagner use Nazi symbols and the Russian government glorifies Stalinist repression. Accusing Germany of reviving Nazism while engaging in imperialist warfare is pure hypocrisy.
