DISINFO: Media report a collapse in Ukraine, both internal and external

SUMMARY

Media reports indicate that Ukraine is suffering both an external and internal collapse. Internal disputes are compounding the impact of increasingly intense Russian attacks, according to media reports. Notably, the country is being shaken by several corruption scandals within the Kyiv leadership. At the same time, the Russian military has been conducting systematic, massive strikes using a wide range of missiles and drones, devastating Ukraine's strategic infrastructure.

RESPONSE

The claim is a gross distortion of facts with the goal of advancing a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the collapse of Ukraine’s governance and military resistance to Russia’s aggression. This disinformation story is based in the supposed claims of unnamed “media” reporting this collapse.

This disinformation story tries to exploit the political crisis that erupted in Ukraine in August 2026 after recently ousted defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov called for wartime elections and president Volodymyr Zelenskyy sacked senior aide Iryna Mudra amid a fresh corruption probe. It also amplifies Ukraine’s air defense shortage due to the lack of enough interceptors. However, this is very different from a supposed “collapse”, which is not mentioned by any upstanding media outlet. Zelenskyy has so far rejected the call for wartime elections as a risk that may divide Ukraine- and which most experts continue considering unfeasible under the Russian bombs-, while some European leaders gathered in Kyiv on 24 August 2026 to pledge additional air defence support for Ukraine.

Narratives portraying Russia as overwhelmingly prevailing over Ukraine and the Russian military as an unstoppable fighting force have been a constant throughout the war, aiming to convince audiences about and the futility of resisting Russia’s invasion. These messages have increased in mid-2026 as Russia’s economic capacity to sustain the war is reducing, consensus among Russian elites about the possibility of a victory is cracking, Ukraine’s technological innovations and drone production have stopped Russia’s advances, the Russian armed forces have been losing more men every month than what they can recruit for some time, and Ukrainian air attacks are straining Russia’s energy facilities and logistic lines in Crimea and other fronts.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that Ukraine is collapsing and losing its state attributes, that Ukraine's days are numbered and it will return to its rightful homeland, that Russia holds all the cards while Ukraine badly needs a respite, or that Ukraine cannot dictate the peace terms because it lost the war.
